How to Make Fireworks in Minecraft

Fireworks are a mandatory item if you want to fly freely through the sky with the Elytra. In addition to that, fireworks can also be used for decoration and battle purposes. Let’s see how to make fireworks in Minecraft!

Before making fireworks in Minecraft

Although you can use all 9 crafting grids to create fireworks in Minecraft, only two slots are needed! You only need 1 paper and 1 gunpowder to make 3 fireworks.

But crafting fireworks this way may not be efficient because you’re not taking advantage of all the locations to create the best fireworks! In detail, you can add up to 3 gunpowder to the crafting recipe to increase the flight time of the firework. The longer the duration of the flight, the higher the fireworks fly into the sky. Flight duration also affects the speed increase when using a rocket with an Elytra.

Another ingredient you can add to the firework recipe is the firework star. You can add up to 7 stars to create more explosions when the firework explodes or to inflict more damage if the firework is used as crossbow ammo. If you fly with a rocket that contains a firework star, you will take damage every time you use the rocket.

How to Make Fireworks in Minecraft

#1 Get 1 paper

Paper can be crafted by using 3 candy canes on the crafting table. Each crafting recipe will give you 3 papers. You can also find paper in the chests that spawn in shipwreck structures, but let’s stick to the candy cane for now!

#2 Collect 1-3 Gunpowder

Gunpowder is a common item that drops from several monsters such as Creepers, Ghasts, and Witches. Withes drop the most Gunpowder on death (6) and up to 15 Gunpowder if using the Looting III weapon. Normally, most Minecrafters will create an automatic creeper farm for gunpowder.

Gunpowder can also be found in chests spawned in dungeons, desert temples, woodland mansions, and shipwreck structures. They have a normal chance of containing 1-8 Gunpowder.

Additionally, you can exchange 1 Emerald with the Traveling Merchant for 1 Gunpowder.

#3 Collect 1-7 Firework Stars (Optional)

You might want to skip to step 4 if you don’t care about the explosion effect or firework damage, or if your main goal is to create fuel for your Elytra.

To craft a firework star, you will need additional gunpowder, dye of any color, and any additional ingredients (optional). You can add up to 8 colorants in this recipe to create a more colorful effect for your fireworks.

Here are the additional ingredients and their effect:

  • Fire Charge: Enlarge the explosion into a circle shape.
  • Gold nugget: Star-shaped explosion.
  • Head (Player or Mob): Creeper face shape.
  • Feather: Confetti explosion.
  • Glowstone Dust: Make the firework particles sparkle.
  • Diamond: Adds a trail effect for the explosion.

You can only use one of the first 4 ingredients in a Firework Star recipe. And you can add both diamond dust and glowstone dust in 1 firework star.

Once you’re done crafting the firework star, you can put it back in the crafting grid with any dye color to create the firework particle fade effect. You can also add up to 8 colorants!

#4 Homemade Fireworks

If you don’t have firework stars, just place 1 piece of paper and 1-3 gunpowder in the crafting grid to craft 3 fireworks.

If you want to use firework stars, there are many recipes you can use to make fireworks. Below are some examples:

  • 1 paper, 1 gunpowder and 1 firework star
  • 1 Paper, 3 Gunpowder, and 5 Firework Stars
  • 1 paper, 1 gunpowder and 7 firework stars
