Mojang has released a developer diary for the upcoming Minecraft Dungeons dungeon crawler that covers the game’s story and background.
Chris Nordgren, the real-time VFX and 3D artist, tells part of the story of Arch-Illiger, the great villain of Minecraft Dungeons:
He became the Arch-Illiger when he gained the power of the Orb of Dominance, but before that he was a misfit Illiger, who couldn’t fit into normal Illiger society, and found this power in a mountain.
Minecraft Dungeons breaks with some Minecraft itself because there is an actual story that you can experience yourself. As told by David Nisshagen the executive producer:
Dungeons has a bit of storytelling, it’s not super deep, super complex, but it just goes on and grows, there’s a certain sense of progression for the player. So we’re really looking to add more to the Minecraft Dungeons narrative, and to do that with the community.
The dev diary isn’t all telling and a vague explanation of the story, there is a hint about the ending and possible commitments to continue this property further along with some pretty solid and promising bits of gameplay. You can watch it for yourself below:
While the currently known release date for Minecraft Dungeons is April, there was a tweet recently that mentioned the possibility of a delay due to COVID-19, but nothing more was said.
Minecraft Dungeons will launch on PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch. The game will be available on Xbox Game Pass at launch.
