Minecraft Dungeons Seasonal Adventures Adds Battle Passes

Mojang has revealed Seasonal Adventures for Minecraft Dungeons, the new framework for adding DLC content to their Diablo-esque dungeon crawler. Seasonal Adventures will bring a new Battle Pass progression system, new cosmetics to earn, and a new way to play the game when it launches in December 2021.

As with most Battle Pass DLC systems, Seasonal Adventures will have both free and paid ways to engage. Cosmetics and rewards will be given out for upgrading, but paying players will be able to earn more shinier content than free players.

New rewards include new pets like a duck and a fox, new styles that add visual effects to your actions, new emotes for dancing and showing off, new cape designs, and new skins.

These will be unlocked through the Adventure Points you will now earn through the various in-game activities. This could be battling through the game’s daily trial or completing the new weekly challenges.

While this style of DLC and monetization is still a bit controversial, Mojang said Seasonal Adventures will be permanent additions to Minecraft Dungeons. Where most games that have seasonal content remove the ability to earn content from older seasons, Microsoft developers are turning to keeping that content in-game and reducing the fear of missing out that some players feel. We see it in Halo: The Master Chief Collection, we’ll see it in Halo Infinite and now in Minecraft Dungeons. It’s awesome.

Another new facet of Minecraft Dungeons will be The Tower. This is a new challenge mode that tasks you with beating 30 levels of a mysterious tower. You’ll start on the first floor with a blank character build, earning new gear as you progress through the levels, hoping you can keep pace with the increased challenge.

Each floor of the tower will feature new combinations of enemies and environments, so jungle monsters can mix with ice monsters, but there will also be new enemies in the tower. The floors are also not constrained to certain conventions, so they can give an outdoor feel to the arena you are fighting in with a huge river running through the middle.

The tower will be generated from a shared randomization seed which is fixed for all players for two weeks. This means you can learn how a particular tower plays and optimize your run over time.

Here is an example from Minecraft Live:

Minecraft Dungeons was released in mid-2020, putting a new spin on the blocky Minecraft universe by mixing it with Diablo’s dungeon crawling. In our Minecraft Dungeons review, Dom wrote:

“Minecraft Dungeons could easily have been ‘My First Dungeon Crawler,’ but it’s so much more than that. It does a great job of taking the hooks of the genre – the waves of enemies, the all-pervading drive for better loot. – and makes them palatable and accessible to a wide audience. It’s a perfect family game, but if you crank up the difficulty, be prepared for epic combat and the epic rewards that come with it.
