Originally, Minecraft Dungeons was more like a Zelda game

Minecraft Dungeons is a Diablo-style dungeon crawling experience. However, the original concept was very different and resembled Zelda. GameSpot reported an interview given by Mojang’s Måns Olson to USG. The outlet said the following.

The game was originally developed with the 3DS in mind, and now in a new interview the game director has revealed that an entirely different style of gameplay was originally planned… Olson has revealed that the game was originally envisioned as a Zelda-style game.

Olson told USG the following.

We wanted to bring a new Minecraft experience to players. To make something new, you have to stray far enough from the base game… If you look at the inspirations now, it’s closer in terms of gameplay to games like Diablo, Torchlight and Gauntlet. So absolutely, there were things that were either implemented and then modified or designed on paper, but never made it into the game.

It’s certainly interesting how it turned into a Diablo-style game, but it’s better for it in my opinion. We can’t wait to play it later this month!
